About Derby Joggers

Who are we?

In 2017 Derby City Council’s Livewell Service started a programme to deliver Couch to 5K. A small group of us who had completed the course ourselves became volunteers to support the C25K programme. As well as supporting the Livewell sessions we were keen to develop a network of social runs as a follow on from the C25K course. In 2018 we became part of the Jog Derbyshire network and with their support we qualified as England Athletics licenced run leaders and set up 4 social jogging groups across the City.

In 2019 when changes to the Council budget put Livewell’s C25K programme at risk, we agreed to take it over. We trained more volunteers to become run leaders and we formed Derby Joggers, bringing all our social running groups together under one name.

In 2020 we were awarded funding by Rethink Mental Illness to train two more run leaders. We are proud to be part of their physical activity project, supporting people affected by mental illness to be more active.

We are Norman, Julie, Andy, Nicky, Vicky, Dawn, Lee, Wend, Rikki and Chris.

What training do we have?

In addition to our England Athletics trained run leaders we also have several volunteers who have done the Jog Derbyshire co-leader training and are qualified to support our runs. We have fully trained first aiders. We also have qualified mental health first aiders.

What about insurance and Health and Safety?

We are insured through England Athletics. We have risk assessments, procedures and plans in place in case of emergencies. We have a specific Covid-19 safety plan in place and a Covid Officer.

Beginner or returning to running

We run Couch to 5K courses regularly, which are ideal for beginners. The NHS Couch to 5K Course is designed to get complete beginners running 5k in two months and is a great way to build confidence and jogging fitness. If you are interested in our Couch to 5K courses please message us on our Derby Joggers Facebook Group or email us at derbyjoggers@gmail.com to find out when the next course starts.

In the meantime, you can join us, and we will make sure someone runs or run/walks with you.

Do we run in any weather?

The main reasons for cancelling are thunder and lightning, icy conditions or extreme heat.

If the weather poses a risk to health and safety, we will post a message on our Facebook page and in our WhatsApp group to let everyone know the run is cancelled.

Can I bring my child

Due to tight restrictions to ensure a Covid secure environment we are not insured to accept anyone under the age of 18.
