Beginners Course 2021 - BISHOP’S STORTFORD RUNNING CLUB 10 WEEKS TO 10k!
Running for beginners
BISHOP’S STORTFORD RUNNING CLUB
10 WEEKS TO 10k!
Wednesday 31 March – Wednesday 02 June 2021
Join our popular ‘Beginners Course’
The 10-week course has been developed over several years by our experienced coaching team with the aim of introducing you to running in a safe and enjoyable way. We start with some gentle walk/jog sessions, and by the end you will be able to run 10 kilometres. This year’s course will use weekly small group face to face coaching on Wednesdays with separate Thursdays Zoom information sessions on a range of running related topics.
How will a Covid-Secure Beginners Course work?
A number of changes have been made to the course to comply with the requirements of creating a Covid-secure environment for participants and coaches. Coached sessions will be according to Government and England Athletics requirements, including sanitisation, limited group size and social distancing. The clubhouse will not be available for changing or for socialising, but a toilet will be available. The first weeks of the course will be on the enclosed field housing the cricket pitches, while later weeks of the course will be on local tracks, in smaller groups.
As the Clubhouse will not be available to host the normally crowded information sessions, these will be held via Zoom presentations separately from the Coached sessions. We have an exciting range of topics in the course this year delivered by experts, including sessions on
- What to wear, running shoes and clothing,
- Running Injury Free
- Mental Health
- Garmin, Strava and other Fitness Devices
- Strength and Conditioning – Pilates,
- Foam rolling and Stretching
- Why do we run? How to be mentally strong when the going gets tough.
- Food and nutrition for runners
Is this course for me?
The course is suitable for absolute beginners, for those who have not run for a number of years. If you can power walk for 30 min to 1 hour, and can jog the distance between 2 lamp posts then you are ready to start the course. It is also well suited to the many people who have completed a Couch to 5k course during lockdown, and want to progress their running in a social environment under the guidance of experienced England Athletics Qualified Coaches. The session steps up distance and time each week and you need to be able to go out and practice running 3-4 times every week so that you are ready for the next session.
If you can already run 10k, then you may prefer to join the Club using https://www.myclubhouse.co.uk/BSRC/Register and attend our regular coached training sessions, which will resume at the beginning of April..
What do I need to wear?
You don’t need lots of kit to start running, but it’s important that you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing. You don’t need special running shoes to get started; you won’t be running long distances just yet. Kit advice is given during the course sessions.
Who leads the course?
All coaching is under the supervision of England Athletics qualified running coaches/leaders who plan and run these sessions. Many of these coaches originally joined the Club via a Beginners course, and so have personal experience of what it takes to complete the course successfully
What happens after the course?
With lockdown restrictions hoped to end completely in June, you will be able to run with other members of the course and of the wider club on runs across the local tracks on Wednesday evenings for the rest of the summer months, with a meal and licenced bar available in the clubhouse to relax with your new friends to enjoy some well-earned food and drink. This leads up to your next challenge, which is planned to be a local 10k race, together with the other beginners from the course. Beyond this, the Running Club has groups for all abilities and you can continue your running in one of those groups after the course. You will also be able to attend all of the Club events and regular coaching sessions for free until end March 2022.
What does it cost and what is included?
The course costs just £50, and includes all this:
- The full 10 week beginners course, professionally coached by UK Athletics Qualified Coaches
- Weekly Zoom presentations by experts on a wide range of running topics
- Full membership of the Club until end March 2022. This includes all of the Club events and regular coaching sessions.
- A BSRC “10 Week to 10k” Technical T-Shirt.
