Frequently Asked Questions

When do we meet? We meet on a Tuesday & Thursday @ 7.00pm. Also Longer runs on Sunday at 9.30am

Where do we meet? Outside the main entrance of Ken Martin Leisure Centre, Hucknall Lane, Nottingham. NG6 8AP. Toilets, drinking water, showers, changing rooms and lockers (£1) are available for use at Ken Martin.

Please try to arrive as close to 7pm as possible so that we can get registration out of the way before starting; as part of our partnership with RunTogether they would like a list of participants so that they can determine how well the program is working.

During summer months we have away days to different places around Nottingham.

See our news and Facebook page for details.

How much does it cost? £2 per Session. We are a 'not for profit' group and all the profits are reinvested back into the group. The primary purpose of the group is not to raise money but to get people outdoors and running.

That said, we unfortunately do have some overheads such as printing of flyers and some other administrative costs which we will keep to an absolute minimum. It is felt that the easiest and fairest way to cover these costs are to charge a small fee of £1 per person per session.

What Should I Wear? The simplest answer is what ever you feel most comfortable in.

The beauty of running is that you don’t need large amounts of kit to take part. I would normally say all you need is a pair of trainers and away you go but recently I have seen people running barefoot (not something I would recommend)

In all seriousness though you don’t need large amount of expensive kit, we are doing these sessions to have a bit of fun not to win the London Marathon!!!

All I would say is be sensible and look the weather on the day, if it is cold a hat a gloves might be useful, if its raining a rain jacket might be useful.

We have put together a list of items to consider:

On your feet: A pair of trainers, – ideally not a pair that you’ve had for 15 years or a pair of ’fashionable casual’ trainers. As you find yourself running a bit more in may be worthwhile having a gait analysis and investing in some running trainers.

I can recommend Decathlon who have some expertise in running trainers at reasonable prices (approximately (£35)). If you want a running specialist up and running (www.upandrunning.co.uk) in Nottingham city centre are amazing, although they are around £100 for a pair of shoes. But well worth the money.

A good pair of comfortable socks, try to avoid socks that rub.

On your legs:

Shorts / Leggings / Running tights / tracksuit bottoms - totally down to personal preference I would however avoid baggy clothing if it is raining as it will get very heavy and uncomfortable. Personally I prefer to run in shorts, but obviously if the weather is cold then I will occasionally wear tights!

On your Top:

T-shirts/Technical T-shirt, – if its warm all you will need is a T-shirt.

Long sleeve T-shirts – in cooler weathers a long sleeve T-shirt can be great. The most important thing to remember is to ‘Layer’. Wear layers of thin tops that you can peel off as you warm up, don’t wear a vest/crop-top and a big thick sweatshirt.

Jackets – These are very much down to personal preferences, you can get thin running jackets that are lightweight and comfortable to run in.

Sports Bra – I can honestly say I have absolutely no informed thoughts on kit. Although Decathlon do have some to start you off or up and running have a good selection. Also look at Runderwear www.runderwear.co.uk.

On your Head:

Hats – useful in both sunny and cold conditions but not absolutely necessary, again down to personal preference.

Sun-glasses – (ever the optimist!) – personally have never run with Sun glasses so I couldn’t comment on their merits. All I will say is make sure they are a good fit, when you're running you don’t want to be irritated by your glasses slipping.

On your hands:

Gloves - after your trainers you will think this is you most important piece of kit you own if it is cold. There is nothing more uncomfortable than numb fingers! they don’t need to be specialist gloves, I used to run in a pair of knitted gloves, as long as they keep you fingers warm.

For after:

I would suggest bringing a bag with a dry top, bottoms and socks. The feeling of putting on fresh socks and a dry warm tracksuit after a good run is fantastic.

Extras:

Water bottle with a drink for after. Water is available inside Ken Martin Leisure centre.
Sun cream – if it’s sunny.
Vaseline - if your prone to chafing.

How long will a session be? Approx. 60mins

Each session will vary slightly as we vary course routes from week to week however a typical program will look something similar to this:

19.00-19.10 Meets and registration.
19.10-19.15 Warm-up
19.15-19.55 Run
19.55-20.00 Cool-down

In terms of distance that we will be covering it is very much dependant upon the pace of the group. It is anticipated however, that initially we will be covering 2-5 Kilometres (don’t worry if this seem a lot I will assess the group and tailor the run accordingly)

Who can take part? Well everybody of course.

The ethos of group is to be is to be as inclusive as possible anybody older than 12 can participate.

Unfortunately due to our insurance children under the age of 12 are welcome but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. They must also run with that guardian.
