About our group
WELCOME to Thamesmead Running Club!
We're an inclusive, active, friendly, England Athletics Affiliated Running Club; volunteer led, community based with runners from Thamesmead and surrounding areas (Abbey Wood, Belvedere, Bexleyheath, Woolwich, Plumstead, Blackheath etc.) established in September 2016. We welcome new and experienced runners, walkers and triathletes looking to excercise with like-minded people.
Each week we run different sessions for a range of abilities from complete beginners nervous about starting running, to runners with decades of experience, long distance runners and triathletes.
We have regular beginner programmes and frequently join local ParkRuns or compete in a variety of local and national races: 5km to Marathons and beyond, not to forget of course the annual licenced Thamesmead 5&10km each year. Our training sessions are led by one of our 7 England Athletics Licenced Run Leaders, co-lead by a trainee Run Leader, a Run Leader Mentor or our Running Coach.
You can also follow us on our social media channels: Facebook Page Thamesmead Running Club /Instagram @RunThamesmead/ Twitter @RunThamesmead

Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before your session starts, do not share water bottles and remain at least 2m apart from other runners. Please listen to your Run Leader/ Coach as they may need to change the session to ensure it is done in a covid secure way.
As such the format of our sessions will be adapted to ensure social distancing and numbers in each session will now be limited. Each session will require you to have signed up in advance on RunTogether and to agree to the club's terms and conditions.
What did we do during Lockdown?
We had an exciting range of Club Lockdown Activites our runners got involved in including:
- Running Club Bingo (family friendly excercise challenges to complete)
- Virtual Quiz Nights
- Virtual Relay Race
- Combined cumulative distance challenges to reach European Cities
- Local Landmarks Runs
- Photo Competitions
What do we offer?
We offer multiple club training sessions each week. The mainstay of our activies are our currently Saturday and Sunday mornings. Our sessions are outdoors and continue throughout the winter come rain or shine. Sessions include a dymanic warm up, running drills for good form and technique, distance runs, hill training, sprints, interval training, agility and co-ordination, strength work, a cool down and static stretching post main session. Sessions are rarely cancelled and only ever safety concerns. England Athletics provide training for our instructors and insurance for our club activities. Our Actvities are linked with their RunTogether (read more here) innitiaitve.
We aim to promote runners' wellbeing through safe gradiated running activities; building community through regular socials and encouraging runners to meet up to train together outside of sessions; improving their fitness and:technique through coaching; building confidence through celebrating runners' achievements; fostering friendly competition through regular races. To be a healthy, injury free, runner requires all over muscle strength and fitness. This can be achieved in a variety of ways and we encourage our runners to explore additional fitness and cross training activities on offer. In Thamesmead, through Now's The Time (Website here) , runners can access indoor cycling, pilates, yoga, aerobics for as little as £1 a session. For those that like swimming or a fully furnished gym, there is also Thamesmere Liesure Centre (part of Better Gyms).

All new runners with us are welcome to have a 1 month free trial. Where do we Run?
We use a variety of routes for our distance runs including beautiful trail Riverside Runs along the Thames Path towards Woolwich/Greenwich eg Thames Barrier Run, 02 River run, Greenwich Park Run. Or we go East towards Erith and Belvedere e.g Queen Elizabeth II Bridge Run or Erith River Run. We also run through Thamesmead via the Green Chain walk, ridgeway, onto Lesnes Park and the hilly Bostall Woods (great for trail and hill training). Other times we may go to Greenwich Park, or Sporting Club Thamesmead, Bayliss Avenue SE28 8NJ for specific coached training sessions eg Hill Training. Coached sessions encorporate running drills, co-ordination, agility, speed, strength , stamina and running technique. These sessions include Hill Training, Interval Training, tempo runs, sprints, agility excercises, core strength excercises as well as other varied running related activities.
To provide ample free parking, lockers, toilets, space to register and avoid waiting outside in the elements, we meet together first at Sporting Club Thamesmead, Bayliss Avenue SE28 8NJ . We do a warm up all together then seperate into our seperate groups for the main session. Occassionally for early start runs in the summer we meet at the Thames Path off St Andrew's Close SE28 8NY (opposite the Red Lighthouse) as the Sports Club may not be open. When travelling to external sites we arrange car sharing and drive in Convoy.
We reguarly compete in races togther: anything from a local 5km to marathons and these are reguarly advertised in our WhatsApp and Facebook groups. We will also be posting details of local races we are entering on our Facebook and Instagram Page (@RunThamesmead) and some on our Competitions and events tab - watch this space.
